The Story of R2-KT

The story of R2-KT does not begin with a robot, but with a little girl named Katie Johnson. In 2004, her father, Albin Johnson, founder of the 501st Legion, received the devastating news that Katie had a brain tumor. In the face of such a heartbreaking reality, a deeply human idea was born: to build for her a droid inspired by R2-D2, her favorite character, to stay by her side and watch over her.

That is how R2-KT came to life. The name was suggested by her sister Allie, and the robot’s distinctive pink color replaced the traditional blue to reflect Katie’s personality and favorite color. In 2005, members of the R2 Builders Club came together to make the project a reality, and while the final unit was still being completed, a pink version stayed with Katie in her final days, leaving behind an image that moved thousands of people around the world.

Katie passed away on August 9, 2005, and less than a year later, on July 8, 2006, R2-KT was completed. Since then, this droid has become an international symbol of love, hope, and support for children facing serious illnesses.

Today, that story lives on through ThePinkForce Foundation. For us, R2-KT is not only the memory of a moving story: it is a way of bringing joy, hope, and emotional support to hospitalized children, especially those facing childhood cancer and other serious diseases. Through hospital visits, R2-KT helps transform difficult moments into experiences filled with closeness, emotion, and hope.

In addition, Katie’s legacy now inspires a new dimension of this mission through Pink Force Factory, an educational and charitable initiative that brings together schools, high schools, and universities to place technology, creativity, and innovation at the service of hospitalized children. In this way, the story of R2-KT is not only remembered: it is projected into the future, building community, inspiring new vocations, and proving that technology can also care, support, and move people.

Because R2-KT represents far more than a robot. It stands as proof that even in the hardest moments, projects can be born that bring light, hope, and humanity to those who need it most.

The fight goes on we must keep fighting for the next Katie.
